Since its formation, West Anchorage High School has had a distinguished history of theatrical firsts in the state of Alaska. The West High Eagles were the first in the state to join the International Thespian Society and have been in good standing with that organization ever since. West Thespians have premiered many performances in the state, such as Les Miserables, making West the first to stage that show at the high school level in Alaska. West Anchorage High School has also been the first place champion in competitive drama at the state level for nearly a decade.
In 2007, West Anchorage High School was selected by the American High School Theatre Festival to be the first high school from the state of Alaska to perform at the International Arts Festival and Fringe in August 2007. West Thespians represented the Anchorage School District, the City of Anchorage and the State of Alaska at the festival held in Edinburgh, Scotland before an international audience which routinely numbers over a million people.
West Thespians presented "Moby Dick: The Musical" a comic musical straight out of London's West End. The show played in Anchorage in June of 2007 then packed up sets and costumes and headed for Scotland. The shows received great reviews and the theatre staff in Scotland raved about their professionalism. Heck, one of the kids was so good, the airplane attendants asked him to join their crew and he did the drink service on the flight over!
West Theatre received a letter of commendation from Mayor Mark Begich and a Legislative Citation from the Alaska State Legislature for their efforts. Great job West Eagle Thespians!!
