STTA History
In the Spring of 1995, parents from Romig Junior High School came to the
administration
of West Anchorage High School with a request. Their children had been part of
an
arts curriculum during seventh and eigth grade, would it be possible to
continue
this during their students high school years? The answer was a resounding yes!
During the Spring and Summer months of that year, three teachers, one
assistant principal,
and a core group of parents designed the West High School Through the Arts
program.
Their vision was to create a program of study that used art as a theme to
connect a variety of study areas. In the Fall of school year 1995-96, the
School Through
the Arts (STTA) program was born.
The program was allowed to evolve over time. Parents and students continued to take part in the development of the program. After four years, STTA had students in every grade level at the high school and continued to expand. The program which began with about 15 original students now numbers about 75.
STTA is now in its 13th year and continues to produce successful students.
